Hiring in Real Estate: What I Look For Beyond the Résumé

Degrees and credentials matter—but not as much as these key traits. Here’s what I prioritize when hiring real estate talent.

In real estate, we often hire based on credentials—years in the industry, specific experience with a software platform, or a certain number of units under management.

But the longer I’ve been in this business, the more I’ve come to value a few intangibles far more than what’s listed on a résumé.

Here’s what I look for when hiring talent—whether it’s a leasing agent, asset manager, or acquisitions analyst.

1. Curiosity Over Certainty

I don’t need someone who has all the answers—I need someone who wants to find them. A curious mind will outperform a closed one, especially in a market that’s constantly shifting.

2. Bias for Action

Real estate doesn’t reward hesitation. I look for people who make thoughtful decisions—but who are also willing to move, adjust, and learn as they go.

3. Clear Communicators

If someone can’t articulate what they’re doing and why, that’s a liability. I prioritize hires who can:

  • Explain problems clearly

  • Own their updates

  • Communicate upward and across teams

4. Calm Under Pressure

Every deal hits friction. Every property has bad days. I need people who don’t panic, who don’t point fingers, and who don’t fold when things get messy.

Composure is an asset.

5. Hunger + Humility

The best people are confident—but grounded. They take ownership, but stay coachable. When someone has both hunger and humility, they grow faster and lead better.

Final Thought
Technical skills can be taught. But character, mindset, and emotional intelligence are the real differentiators—especially in real estate.

So yes, we review résumés. But we hire for the long game.
